In Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill illustrates a secret concerning accumulating wealth that was brought to his attention by Andrew Carnegie, a man who built an industrial empire which made him the 4th richest human being of all time (an inflation-adjusted net worth of 310 billion USD).

Everything begins with a thought. Whether you are deciding what to eat, your career path, or even what you generally want out of life, the first thing that occurs is a thought. One of the greatest assets we can ever acquire is to know that an intangible impulse of thought can be transmuted into its physical counterpart by the application of known principles.

All it takes is one idea to become a success. And when riches do begin to come, they arrive so quickly and in such large amounts that you will wonder where they have been hiding throughout your life.

Think and Grow Rich consists of a series of steps to riches, which will be outlined and summarized below:

1. Desire: the Starting Point of All Achievement

  • Everyone wishes to have more money, but wishing does not invite riches. However, desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches.
2. Faith: Visualizing and Believing in the Attainment of Desire

  • Faith, love, and sex are the most powerful of all the major positive emotions. What few people know, however, is that filling your mind with positive emotions will create an environment which helps you to develop faith. Hill reminds students of thinking and growing rich that all impulses of thought have a tendency to clothe themselves in their physical equivalent.

  • Challenge: Which step to riches deals with believing in something so strongly that it has no choice but to clothe itself in its physical equivalent?

3. Auto-Suggestion: the Medium for Influencing the Subconscious Mind

  • No thought, whether it is negative or positive, can enter the subconscious mind without the aid of the principle of autosuggestion, with the exception of thoughts picked up from the ether. After completing this course, you will better understand how to transmute desire into money by using autosuggestion.

4. Specialized Knowledge: Personal Experiences or Observations

  • There are two kinds of knowledge: general and specialized. Specialized knowledge gives you the potential power to attract money to yourself.

5. Imagination: the Workshop of the Mind

  • It has been said that we can create anything we can imagine, and the ideas that we come up with are the starting point of great fortune. Our only limitation (within reason) lies in the development and use of our imagination.

6. Organized Planning: the Crystallization of Desire into Action

  • In order to achieve great success in life, you will most definitely need a plan (note that this works best if the plan is physically written down). Here we will explore what makes a great leader, and remind you that most great leaders began in the capacity of followers. They became great leaders because they were intelligent followers.

7. Decision: the Mastery of Procrastination

  • One of the most important things we can do (if we wish to become rich) is to form the habit of reaching decisions promptly and changing these decisions slowly (if they are indeed changed). Those who do reach their decisions promptly and definitely know what they want, and generally get it.

  • Challenge: Which step to riches deals with creating anything that we can come up with in our minds?
    • Desire
    • Imagination
    • Organized Planning
    • Decision

8. Persistence: the Sustained Effort Necessary to Induce Faith

  • Without persistence, you will be defeated, even before you start. With persistence, you will win. Be persistent no matter how slowly you may, at first, have to move. WITH PERSISTENCE WILL COME SUCCESS.

9. Power of the Master Mind: the Driving Source

  • The “Master Mind” is defined by the author as: “coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.” This Master Mind group that we form will provide us with many economic advantages, possibly even solidifying our future financial status.
